Jill and Manzoor Billoo started Chinar Designs in 2009 out of Jill’s appreciation and love of all the crafts in Kashmir, India (embroidery, woodwork, papier mache, carpet weaving, among a few).   Manzoor was born in Kashmir.  They were able to gain a knowledge and access to some of the best craftsmen in Srinagar, Kashmir through their friend Rashid, who has over 30 years experience in this cottage industry.

Chinar Designs create contemporary rugs and cushion covers in chainstitch embroidery with woolen yarn.  It is an industry which has existed for nearly 200 years.  The motifs were traditionally selected by the embroiderer from his surroundings and included flowers, vines and birds and then later in geometric shapes.  The rugs and cushion covers are all handmade by adult male craftsmen, using wool and backed by cotton.  

The products can be either hand washed or machine washed on a gentle cycle and dried flat in the shade.
